Our Community Food Network
Each month, Harvesters distributes nearly 2,000 government food boxes to seniors, persons with disabilities, and low income families in the Topeka and surrounding communities. Volunteers assemble boxes and pack government commodity items for monthly distributions, sort and repackage donated food product, and pack BackSnack kits for area school children. Currently, Covenant Disciple Groups at Susanna Wesley support BackSnack programs at McClure and Randolph schools. These kits help fill the gap for kids who get nutritious meals at school, but may wonder where their next meal is coming from over the weekends. By packing boxes at the Harvesters facility, SWUMC is involved in the entire process from packing at the distribution center to delivering to the schools.
